Choosing bin sticker colours
A bin number is doing its job when someone can read it from a few metres away, in glare, on a dirty bin.
Bin Stickers UK is an independent sticker supplier. We are not a council or government waste service. Confirm collection days, missed bins and replacement bins on your council's official website.
Start with the plastic, not the brand colour
- Dark green, burgundy, navy or black bins โ white or a light yellow number. Mid-grey disappears.
- Light grey, beige or pale green bins โ black or dark green. White on a pale lid only works if the sticker has a solid dark block behind the digits.
- Red or bright yellow lids โ black usually wins. White can work on a deep red lid if the digits are large.
Lid colours are not the same in every council. Do not assume a green lid means garden waste, or a yellow lid means recycling, until your council says so.
Waste-type labels
If you add the words General waste, Recycling, Food waste or Garden waste, use the same contrast rules. A coloured strip that matches a council leaflet is helpful only when it still contrasts with the bin. Two colours of vinyl on one sticker is harder to apply than one colour cut as letters. For a kerbside number, one strong colour is enough.
Sun fade
All outdoor vinyl fades. Lighter pigments on a dark bin stay legible longer than a thin red on a dark green lid. If a number is already ghosted, replace it rather than sticking a second pale layer on top. See how long bin stickers last.
