How to replace a bin number sticker
Take the old vinyl off, get the adhesive off the plastic, and only then apply the new number. Sticking a new label over a peeling one fails.
Bin Stickers UK is an independent sticker supplier. We are not a council or government waste service. Confirm collection days, missed bins and replacement bins on your council's official website.
Remove the old vinyl
- Warm the sticker with a hair dryer on a low setting. Keep the dryer moving so you do not melt the bin.
- Lift a corner with a fingernail or a plastic scraper. Pull slowly back on itself, not straight up. Slow pulling takes more of the adhesive with the vinyl.
- If it shreds, warm it again and lift the next piece. Do not gouge the plastic with a metal blade.
Leave any council-issued serial, barcode or asset tag that is still stuck down and readable. Your replacement number goes beside it unless the council has told you that mark is obsolete.
Clean the adhesive
Rub remaining glue with a cloth and a citrus adhesive remover or isopropyl alcohol. Test a small spot. Wash with detergent and water afterwards so the solvent is not trapped under the new vinyl. Let the plastic dry completely.
Confirm the number first
Copy the number from the old sticker before you destroy it, or from another bin at the same property, or from the council. Do not guess a house number if the council uses a different identifier. How to find your bin number covers that. Then apply the new sticker on a flat area.
